QAs a merchant, what do I need to care about?

Nine dimensions merchants should review before joining:

Merchant snapshot

Japan's No.1 fashion e-commerce platform, D2C-led with ZOZOSUIT tech differentiation and steady profitability expanding into beauty; suited to Japanese fashion brands with brand power, not to low-price fast fashion.

Entry requirements

Entry is as a brand/corporate entity (B2B2C/consignment sales 委託販売 model), requiring a business license and operating qualifications, brand awareness and image, products meeting ZOZOTOWN standards, and Japanese-language operation capability or a local Japanese agent (per lishaowei, third-party source). The process: submit application → platform review (brand awareness, sales, number of SKUs, etc.) → sign contract and pay deposit → list products; Japan local warehousing/logistics coordination is required. ZOZO also operates its own brands (ZOZO, Multi-Size) and 1P direct sales; third-party brand entry is subject to commercial negotiation.

Fee structure

ZOZOTOWN does not publish a unified fee schedule: store fees/franchise fees, commissions (売上歩合) and deposits are all negotiated per contract, per official and contractual terms (hard rule: no figures are fabricated when no reliable public numbers exist). In April 2026 it acquired fragrance platform COLORIA (¥4.95B) to enter beauty; its fees are not yet disclosed. ZOZO offers the 'Fulfillment by ZOZO' logistics support service (official 2019 announcement); fees per official sources.

Getting traffic

On-site search + category/brand flagship stores + daily deals (毎日お買い得, limited-time discount campaigns) are the core organic traffic. ZOZO fashion content and styling recommendations (スタイリング) drive discovery. ZOZOSUIT/3D measurement data feeds size recommendations, lowering returns and lifting conversion (qualitative description). The platform is closed — no large-scale open ad system — and traffic allocation favors depth of brand partnership and operational quality.

Fulfilment & logistics

Brands mainly fulfill from their own warehouses or via third parties; ZOZO provides the 'Fulfillment by ZOZO' logistics support (official 2019 announcement). ZOZOTOWN offers consumer conveniences such as time-slot delivery (時間帯指定); timeliness and shipping fees are set by the brand/store and disclosed on product pages.

Payments & settlement

Payment supports credit cards (VISA, etc.), PayPal, LINE Pay, convenience-store payment and its own ZOZOCARD. Cash-on-delivery (ツケ払い) was once offered (third-party source, with a JPY 324 handling fee; may have changed, per official sources). Settlement cycles and payment terms for consignment proceeds (委託販売货款) are per contract; currency is JPY.

Compliance

A Japanese legal entity/brand qualification and JCT consumption-tax invoice compliance are required. Merchants must follow the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions (mail-order disclosure obligations) and the Fiber Products Quality Labeling Act (繊維製品品質表示法, garment material/washing labels). ZOZOTOWN has uniform return rules, and brands must comply with the platform's after-sales standards. Cross-border brands usually need a Japan local entity or agent to hold contracts and handle customer service.

Key risks

1) Limited scale — revenue of about ¥185–190B is not in the same league as Rakuten/Amazon's hundreds-of-billions-of-yen GMV; 2) category concentration and dependence on apparel with intense price competition (the bankruptcy of Zootie, a leading Japanese women's-apparel e-commerce player, is a background signal), and cross-border fast fashion such as Shein attacks on price; 3) weak platform openness, rising 1P/own-brand share, and third-party brands have limited pricing and traffic leverage; 4) execution risk in beauty/fragrance (COLORIA) expansion; 5) review thresholds and deposit requirements are unfriendly to small/medium brands.

Best-fit sellers

Best suited to fashion brands based in Japan or deeply committed to the Japanese market (apparel, shoes/bags, accessories), with brand awareness and inventory management, willing to follow the consignment model and ZOZO's operating rules; also brands using ZOZOSUIT measurement tech for high-ticket/low-return strategies. Not suited to low-price fast fashion (direct clash with Shein), non-fashion categories, or small sellers lacking brand assets (hard to pass review).
