Vinted

Vinted in 1 regional ecommerce markets: Europe — GMV / share / growth / positioning from each region’s Top-5 report.

QAs a merchant, what do I need to care about?

Nine dimensions merchants should review before joining:

Merchant snapshot

Europe's C2C used-fashion leader; zero fees for sellers with buyers paying a protection fee. Best for individuals/small B sellers clearing fashion inventory at zero cost; but the protection fee faces regulatory controversy and disputes are common — not suited to established brands running a flagship presence.

Entry requirements

Under the C2C model, individual sellers register free, photograph and list, and sell — no company entity needed; this is the biggest difference from B2C marketplaces. Professional/brand sellers can apply for Vinted Professional (merchant account, requiring company qualifications and brand authorization, strictly reviewed). Registration is available in each site's localized language (EN/FR/DE, etc.); cross-border sellers can sell into multiple countries but must register on each site and localize operations. Headquartered in Lithuania and privately held (2025 secondary-market valuation €8B), with no public merchant-acquisition agency system.

Fee structure

Zero fees on the seller side: free listing, free selling, free withdrawal; platform revenue comes from the Buyer Protection Fee and optional logistics/promotion value-added services. The UK buyer protection fee is about 5% + 70p (https://www.vinted.ie/pricelist); rates differ by country — per the official price list. The buyer protection fee is the platform's core monetization item and was criticized in 2025 as a "cost trap" (kpw.law). Vinted Go carrier shipping is paid by the buyer or subsidized by the seller (sellers can opt into free shipping).

Getting traffic

Driven by the used-fashion mindset + low-price supply: buyers discover items via search, follows, and recommendations; the C2C supply base determines the traffic pool, with no traditional paid ad inventory; the platform relies on category mindset (mainly womenswear/childrenswear) and 500K+ pickup points to improve experience. Seller visibility depends on pricing, image quality, category, and account ratings; Germany's 2025 turnaround shows the core market is profitable.

Fulfilment & logistics

Vertically integrated logistics: the Vinted Go Carrier own-brand carrier (Belgium/France/Netherlands/Portugal/Spain) plus third-party carriers, with 500K+ pickup points (parcel lockers/stores); cross-border used-goods transactions are mostly small light parcels, with shipping calculated by weight/destination; sellers can choose their own carrier or the platform's recommendation, and buyer-side shipping + protection fee are settled together.

Payments & settlement

Vinted Pay wallet: buyer payment is held by the platform, released after the seller confirms shipment and the buyer confirms receipt, then the seller withdraws to a bank account (instant withdrawal is paid in some markets); settlement is in each site's local currency (EUR/GBP, etc.). Escrow-style settlement inherently lowers transaction risk for individual sellers, but payout timing depends on how quickly the buyer confirms receipt.

Compliance

As an EU DSA Very Large Online Platform (VLOP) it bears product-governance obligations; UK consumer-protection bodies such as Trading Standards monitor its dispute handling; in 2025, the Berlin Higher Regional Court ruled Vinted's default buyer-protection fee unlawful (reported by yilantop/amz123) — the buyer-protection-fee mechanism faces regulatory compliance risk. Tax on C2C sellers (declaring sale income) is the seller's own responsibility; the platform bears governance responsibility for counterfeit/IP complaints.

Key risks

1) Buyer-protection-fee controversy and regulation: Berlin court ruled default charging unlawful, UK's 5%+70p criticized as a "cost trap" — rate or protection-fee increases easily trigger user backlash; 2) frequent buyer-seller disputes and scam complaints (resolver reports), heavy platform-governance pressure; 3) earnings volatility: 2025 net profit €62M (-19%) and adj. EBITDA -5% — an investment year; 4) category concentration in fashion and dependence on C2C supply, with eBay/Depop/Vestiaire Collective competing for supply and buyers.

Best-fit sellers

Best for: individual sellers and small B merchants clearing used-fashion inventory at zero cost (fast-turnover categories like fast fashion, childrenswear, sportswear), and closeout merchants with large volumes of slow-moving/used apparel; European consumers have a mature used-goods mindset and cross-border transactions are viable. Not suitable for: established brands needing flagship stores, customer-asset building, and controllable pricing (no store system, buyer-protection-fee controversy), or high-price bulky categories (high shipping/return costs).
