Kakao Commerce

Kakao Commerce in 1 regional ecommerce markets: Korea — GMV / share / growth / positioning from each region’s Top-5 report.

QAs a merchant, what do I need to care about?

Nine dimensions merchants should review before joining:

Merchant snapshot

The KakaoTalk shopping ecosystem (Gift + Talk Deal + shopping entry): social distribution from the national IM's ~50 million users plus a KakaoPay closed loop. Suited to brand gifting/social-marketing scenarios; not a shelf-style platform, e-commerce growth is slowing (2025 integrated transaction value +6%), and commission rates are not disclosed.

Entry requirements

Merchants onboard through the Kakao Seller Center (파트너센터), covering entries such as KakaoTalk Gift (선물하기), Talk Deal (톡딜) and shopping search. A Korean corporate entity + mail-order sales declaration are typically required; no official cross-border onboarding channel for overseas sellers was found — overseas sellers need a Korean local entity or partner (per official sources). Kakao Makers (카카오메이커스) is a creator-product platform (operated separately). In 2026 the affiliate-marketing service Talk Affiliate is being rolled out (short-video + gifting purchase path, already in pilot); commission rates will be announced separately (DigitalToday 2026.2.27).

Fee structure

No official unified commission rate was found; exact terms are per the Kakao Seller Center's official fee schedule. Talk Affiliate charges sellers a commission per transaction, with rates to be announced (DigitalToday 2026.2.27). Ad costs (Talk Biz ad placements, performance-based ads) and logistics fees are per official sources.

Getting traffic

Social/chat-scenario distribution from KakaoTalk's ~50 million users (Korea's national IM): gifting (Gift) is the core scenario (strong holiday/birthday use), Talk Deal aggregates discounts, and there are in-chat shopping entries plus short-video content commerce. 2025 integrated e-commerce transaction value was ₩10.6 trillion (+6%, a marked slowdown from previous double-digit growth); Q4'25 single-quarter GMV broke ₩3 trillion for the first time (+12%, DigitalToday 2026.2.12). In 2026 the focus is performance-based monetization (Talk Affiliate) and AI commerce touchpoints (Kanana in Talk in-chat shopping, DigitalToday 2026.2.27).

Fulfilment & logistics

No self-built warehousing/delivery: Gift/Talk Deal ship directly from merchants/brands, and fresh/next-day delivery depends on the brand's own or partner logistics. The platform has no unified fulfillment system; timeliness and shipping fees are set and disclosed by sellers (from July 2025 the KFTC requires Gift shipping fees to be disclosed separately from product prices, koreajoongangdaily).

Payments & settlement

KakaoPay payment closed loop (in-ecosystem payment with high penetration in Korea); buyers can pay via KakaoPay/credit card/account transfer, etc. Settlement cycles and fees are per the Kakao Seller Center's announcements (no specific figures were captured in this research).

Compliance

Korea's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA/PIPC) is strictly enforced, and social + payment data are highly sensitive (cf. the case where cross-border platform Temu was fined ₩1.38B by the PIPC over cross-border data transfers, DataGuidance). In July 2025 the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) required Kakao to separate Gift shipping fees from product prices — 'free shipping' marketing was deemed unfair (koreajoongangdaily). Merchants must follow consumer-protection law (refunds, shipping-fee disclosure) and Kakao's ad operating policies.

Key risks

1) E-commerce growth is slowing: 2025 integrated transaction value of ₩10.6T was only +6%, far below the previous double-digit growth (DigitalToday 2026.2.12); 2) opaque commissions/rates: no official unified commission publication, and new monetization such as Talk Affiliate is just starting with rates undecided; 3) the platform is positioned for brand/social scenarios rather than as a shelf-style traffic platform, so it doesn't fit high-volume listing models; 4) regulation: KFTC scrutiny of marketing practices such as 'free shipping' (July 2025 shipping-separation requirement); 5) unclear openness to overseas sellers and no official cross-border onboarding channel.

Best-fit sellers

Best suited to: brands targeting Korean consumers (strong gifting/holiday scenarios — beauty, food, gifts, fashion), merchants with KakaoTalk content/social operating capability, and sellers aiming for brand exposure and social virality; its near-list position (candidate to replace a Top-5 slot) shows its ecosystem value is recognized. Not suited to: cross-border listing sellers chasing search traffic and scale volume, small sellers without a Korean entity, or standard e-commerce operators needing an open shelf plus platform warehousing/fulfillment.
